Reflecting on Compact Disc’s 25 years on……
Hello Everyone,
I wanted to highlight a couple of interesting articles. Firstly, the Compact Disc turns 25 today! In case you’re wondering what the first ever production CD contained here’s the answer: ABBA.
Of course, Intraware has spent the last ten years doing our part to undermine the number of CD’s produced. Our own VP of Sales James Brentano recently published an article on the global effects of physical distribution on “Earth2Tech” You can read the full article here.
I can remember when the Winslow Fund approached us about electronic software distribution back in 2004. Winslow is a fund that focuses on “green” investing. At the time they understood how significant both the impact of CD’s and therefore the benefits of electronic delivery were for the environment. They were ahead of their time. In 2004 no customer or prospect raised that issue as an motivating factor when we met with them. Now, in 2007, that issue is making it onto the “Top 5 reasons” list for many of our customers and prospects. I recently heard of one large software company that charges a premium for physical distribution vs electronic distribution. They take that surcharge on physical goods and donate it to environmental causes.
Anyway, Happy 25th Birthday to the CD. I suspect there won’t be a 50th.

This article seemed to fade away. With $100 oil approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to bring up this subject again. I wonder how many and what types of companies are looking to stop burning CD’s and go the way of digital software delivery today.
